1994 and 1995 Trek 930/950/970

The 1994 Trek 930/950/970 bikes were completely revised from the 1993 version. They were still made in the USA using True Temper tubing, but now the frames were TIG welded instead of lugged, and as a result had cleaner lines and lower weight. In 1994 I was working as a mechanic at Start to Finish in San Francisco, so I built up lots of these bikes. The 930 was one of the best selling bikes in the shop, priced right around $500. All three bikes shared the same frame and fork, but the parts spec improved as you spent more. I used my employee discount to buy an Ice Blue 950 with Shimano LX, but then built my own wheels and switched back to old school 7 speed XT thumb shifters. I loved that bike. The 1995 year bikes were basically unchanged other than color. As chance would have it, we now have FOUR of these frames for sale on BikeList. If you follow Instagram, you will know these bikes have become incredibly popular for anything from custom builds and restorations to commuter bikes and bikepacking. They are absolutely bombproof and represent a truly great era for Trek. Get one for yourself and see!

The Bicycle Trader

July 19, 2022 12:24pm by rob

Last week I visited Bradley Woehl at American Cyclery in San Francisco. Bradley is the third owner of American Cyclery, which was first opened in 1941 by legendary six day racer Oscar Juner. Back during the summer of 1989 I worked across the street from Oscar at San Francisco Cyclery, a small Schwinn shop. (I had tried to get a job at American Cyclery first, but Oscar turned me down when I admitted that I had no idea how to rebuild a Bendix two-speed kickback hub.)

Bradley showed me around the shop a bit, and then I told him about BikeList. Bradley liked the idea of BikeList a lot. In fact, he'd had the same the idea way back in 1997, when he launched The Bicycle Trader (only to be driven out of the business by the high print costs.) He showed me the copy below, which he keeps in his extensive basement archives. Luckily today we have the Internet!

UPDATE: NAHBS HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED. WE WILL UPDATE HERE AS WE GET MORE INFO!

We just signed up as an exhibitor at NAHBS in Denver from September 23 to 25. So if you are in town or at the show, be sure to swing by booth 741 (over near the big Campy and Shimano booths). We will have a few frames on display (that you can buy on the site!) and of course will be showing off the site, getting feedback and answering questions. In the meantime, you can see all the NAHBS pics I published on Pedalroom back in 2016.
